Day 120: Homeschool Harmonizers

Last night I went to the first performance of the Homeschool Harmonizers’ spring production “Promise U.” Homeschool Harmonizers (or as everyone ever associated with the group calls it “Harmonizers”) is a group of Homeschooled students who meet Friday mornings to for drama, singing, and some dancing. During the fall they rehearse Christmas music and visit various nursing homes to perform in December, and during the spring they put on a musical.

Harmonizers was started in 1997 by Ms. Cindy as part of a larger Homeschool Co-op with 12 kids, one of which was me! It later broke off and became a separate group which at its largest had 70 kids. (After a while it became too large and had to downsize abit) I stayed in the group for the next eight years even after I graduated from high school, and I helped out with the spring musical the two years after that.

I love this group so much! I learned so much while I was in it about acting and being onstage, as well as developing some of my dancing skills in styles other than ballet. I’m rarely nervous when I have to speak in front of large groups of people and I know being part of this group is a big part of the reason why. I have fond memories of each of the shows I was a part of, and I was able to develop great relationships with the other kids in the group, many of which continue to this day.

Many Harmonizer alumni I know wish they were still in Harmonizers, which is probably why if they can many stay on a year or two after they graduate from high school. Jen is one alumni who has a master’s degree in organ, but still comes back every year to help out.

Last year because I was out of a job or working part-time for most of the school year I was able to come back to help out, and even be part of the show. I learned a lot in that year about reading music. I love to sing, but am not much of a soloist. I know how to read music, but not very well until last year. I was amazed at how much I learned about reading music and how much better I am at it now.

Harmonizers has done some pretty amazing shows from Christian kids’ musicals, to variety shows, to full-fledge musicals. (“Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”, twice!) I love coming back each year and seeing how amazingly talented these kids are! It’s so cool for me to see kids grow and develop as performers through the years. I’m always blessed by the show they put on, and I know the audiences are too.

Day 120: Thank you Lord for the Homeschool Harmonizers and the impact it’s had on my life, and the lives of so many others. Thank you that I was able to be part of this group for so many years.

Day 119: April

It’s hard to believe the month of April is almost over, but it is. It’s been a bit of a rainy month here especially towards the end, but as the saying goes “April flowers bring May flowers.” The flowers near me have really been blooming this past week, and when I think of April I think more about the flowers blooming than rain.

The past couple years something big has happened in my life during the month of April. Some years it’s been something good, others bad, one year something good and something bad happened. This year it happened again, however didn’t actually start in April but the end of March and carried over into April. I don’t know why all these things keep happening in April, but they are!

Day 119: Thank you Lord for the month of April it’s such a beautiful month where things seem to happen.

Day 118: Being Single

This morning at church the sermon was about being single; how it is a gift that singles can use to bless the body of Christ. It was such a great reminder for me. I’ve never been married, never even had a boyfriend, because I believe that if God wills he will bring the right man along, and if not I’m ok with it. But that doesn’t mean I don’t struggle at times with being single. I’d love to be in a relationship, but my beliefs on the subject are stronger than my personal desires.

I do see the benefits of being single. I can devote time that I would not have if I were married or in a relationship to God’s work. If God wants me to get married someday so be it, but I am happy to serve him like I am while I’m single.

Day 118: Thank you Lord that I can serve you like I can while I’m single.

Day 117: Opportunities to Serve

Tonight I had the opportunity to serve the youth of my church and their parents at their annual Semi-Formal Banquet, and tomorrow I will be serving in the church bookstore. I used to think I hated serving, and maybe when I was younger I did, but recently I’ve realized I really enjoy serving the body of Christ. I don’t go out and volunteer for every event where they need people to serve, but if something comes up that I’m interested in and I have time I will.

I find serving the people of God very rewarding, and I enjoy being able to bless people by serving them. People are always telling me “Thank you for serving” and I have a good time. I try to remember that I am following Christ’s example who did not come to be served but to serve, who also said if you want to be the greatest you must be the servant of all.

Day 117: Thank you Lord for the opportunities I have to serve your people and be a blessing to them.

Day 116: Easy communication over great distances

Two of my closest friends live on the other side of the country, so I don’t get to see them very much. I really wish someone would invent teleporting technology so I could see them more often. But until then I have to be content with cell phones and Facebook.

I was able to talk with both of them today one by texting and the other on the phone, because she doesn’t have texting :(. I was thinking about how easy it is today with our technology to communicate across the country or even across the world. In seconds we can communicate with someone on the other side of the country or world. One hundred years ago it would take much longer and it wasn’t always reliable. Not too long before that the only way they could communicate only by letters and it would take a long time for it to reach the person you were writing to, and even longer to get a reply back. Isn’t it amazing how far technology has come?

Day 116: Thank you Lord for how easy it is to communicate with people over great distances, so we can keep in touch and know what is going on in the world.

Day 115: Surprises in the Mail

Even with all the technology we have today I still like getting stuff in the mail box, especially if I’m not expecting it. I like being able to hold something in my hands and read it, not on a screen. Computers and e-mail are fine, and convenient but it’s not the same as paper. Growing up I had a couple of pen pals and I enjoyed sending and receiving letters with them; checking the mailbox each day waiting for their letter.

While I was staying at my aunt’s over the weekend I spent some time looking at a book she owned, and mentioned I wouldn’t mind owning it. When I got home from work today there was a package waiting for me. My aunt had gone online and ordered the book for me! It was such a surprise, and a nice gift! It really brightened my day, and that’s what’s so nice about getting things in the mail.

Day 115: Thank you Lord for surprises in the mail, they can really brighten your day!

Day 114: Flowers Blooming

Over the past few days I’ve been noticing all the flowers blooming outside. Now it really feels like spring to me, it’s so beautiful! There are so many colors in flowers, and I think God expressed a great deal of creativity when he created them. Pansies are my favorite flowers, I love all the different colors there, and you get two colors for one! But I love all flowers, I just wish they didn’t wreck such havoc on my allergies!

Day 114: Thank you Lord for flowers blooming and all the beauty they display to enhance our world for your glory.
