Day 359: Christmas

As I’ve said several times this month I LOVE Christmas! I can’t believe it’s Christmas day already! I hope you had a good one, mine was except I have a terrible cold. It’s terrible to be sick on Christmas and this isn’t the first time it’s happened to me, but I think I appreciated Christmas more this year, because I had to focus on what was going on more and not be distracted by how I was feeling.

It’s wonderful to get things for Christmas (and I did get some cool things this year) but it’s not what Christmas is all about. It’s about the ultimate gift: God’s Son Jesus, coming to earth as a baby to ultimately die on the cross to save us from our sins. While there are many nice things and traditions surrounding Christmas that’s what it is all about in the end, and that’s why we celebrate!

Day 359: Thank you Lord for Christmas! Thank you for coming to earth as a baby, helpless to grow into a man who would die on the cross for me!

Day 358: Christmas Eve Service

Merry Christmas Eve! I can’t believe tomorrow’s Christmas already! Something my family’s done pretty much every Christmas eve for as long as I can remember is going to the Christmas Eve service at church. I love going to the service, for one thing it’s nice to be able to see people and wish them Merry Christmas, but the main reason is with all the hubbub of Christmas day it can be easy to forget the reason we’re celebrating.

Jesus Christ the son of God came to earth as a baby, lived a perfect life, and died on the cross for our sins. My family always includes Jesus in our Christmas celebration, but he isn’t always the main focus. That’s why I love the Christmas Eve service, it’s all about Jesus, and remembering and celebrating his birth! It’s right before Christmas Day and puts me in the right mindset for the following day!

Day 358: Thank you Lord for the Christmas Eve service so we don’t forget what Christmas is all about, and have the right mindset for Christmas Day!

Day 356: The Nutcracker

For me it wouldn’t be Christmas without The Nutcracker! My Grandmother took me to see my first Nutcracker Ballet when I was really little, I can’t remember how old exactly but I can’t remember a Christmas when I was a kid without going to see it. I love the story of Clara and her Nutcracker Prince, and I’ve seen it more times than I can remember either in person or the various versions on video. I know the Nutcracker is what got me interested in ballet when I was little.

I also own several Nutcrackers and it doesn’t feel right if they’re not out for Christmas! I decorated my cubicle at work this year for Christmas with a Nutcracker theme, I have a tree with mice, soldiers, and a Nutcracker; Clara and the Prince surrounded by snowflakes; each one of the candies and countries from the second act; and around the top on each of the corners is a small Nutcracker. I’ve always wanted to be in a production of the Nutcracker, I don’t care what part, but I’ve never had the opportunity to, still I hope to someday!

Day 356: Thank you Lord for The Nutcracker! It’s such a wonderful Christmas tradition, and I’m so glad it got me interested in ballet so long ago!

Day 355: Live Nativity

For the past 10 years every Christmas I’ve attended a Live Nativity outside in the cold and sometimes snow. I went to it tonight (though in the warmer weather) and as always really enjoyed it. It’s one thing to read the Christmas story, but it’s completely different to see it acted out right in front of you, hearing the story read aloud, hearing and seeing actual animals, listening to the Christmas music to go with each scene. The one I attend usually takes place the weekend before Christmas, and especially when it’s a few days before Christmas Day like this year it really helps me get ready for Christmas. It’s a wonderful reminder of what Christmas is really all about!

Day 349: Modern Day Christmas Story Videos from Last Year

Last year for each Sunday of Advent and Christmas Eve a local church did a series of videos depicting the Christmas story but in a modern-day setting. I was introduced to them on Facebook because I know a couple people in them, and I can’t tell you how much they affected me last year. Each one is powerful, and gave me a new perspective on the Christmas story. I’ve included each one of the videos below, and I encourage you to watch them all!

Part 1: Mary

Part 2: Joseph

Part 3: Magnificat (Mary and Elizabeth)

Part 4: Shepherds

Part 5: Let There Be Light (The Birth of Christ)

Day 349: Thank you Lord for the Modern Day Christmas Story Videos from last year, they really gave me a new perspective on the Christmas story last year.

Day 347: Christmas Parties

I had a great time at a Christmas party tonight! Parties in general are usually fun, but Christmas parties are special and even more fun. Not just because you can only have them during one month of the year, but everyone’s in a festive mood, and wants to celebrate. It’s a great way to get together with people, have fun, and get ready for Christmas!

You can also do stuff you can’t do any other time during the year like singing Christmas carols (when else can you really sing songs together?) and doing a “White Elephant” gift exchange. I always have a lot of fun during a gift exchange, it’s a change to give away random stuff and get something fun. I can’t think of a single gift I’ve gotten during one of those gift exchanges that I didn’t like or use at least once.

Day 347: Thank you Lord for Christmas parties, they’re so much fun, and a great way to get ready for Christmas!

Day 345: Christmas Movies

I’ve said before that I LOVE Christmas, from Black Friday to Epiphany is Christmas for me. Besides listening to Christmas music one of the main things I do during this time is watch Christmas movies! Whether they’re old, classic, new, Santa-themed, Christian themed, it doesn’t matter I watch them all! Other than new episodes of my the tv shows I watch Christmas movies are pretty much the only things I watch during the month of December. It really helps get me ready for Christmas, even if they don’t directly remind me of the birth of Christ.

There are a lot of classic Christmas movies I really enjoy, in fact I can’t think of a single famous one I’ve seen that I didn’t really enjoy. If I had to pick a favorite one it would probably be “Holiday Inn.” (If you’ve never heard of it, don’t worry a lot of people I know haven’t) It was the first movie to feature the song “White Christmas” and is about an entertainer (played by Bing Crosby) who decides to open up an Inn in Connecticut that’s only open on Holidays for a show. The movie takes place over the course of a year, and features all the major holidays with songs to go a long with them.

I couldn’t write a post about Christmas movies without at least mentioning “A Christmas Carol.” I’ve pretty much every version out there and love all of them. The story is so powerful and meaningful, and I think every actor who plays Scrooge nails it, from Michael Caine, Kelsey Grammer, George C Scott, Patrick Stewart, and my family’s favorite version with Albert Finney. Below is my favorite song from the musical version with Albert Finney, my family quotes this song often throughout the year.
