#412: Extra Help in the Bookstore

Once a month I serve in my church’s bookstore. It’s something I really enjoy doing and this is the seventh year I’ve done it. This year we’re having a sale on everything in the bookstore this week and next week, and today was my week to serve. I knew it was going to be busy, but it ended up being even busier than I thought. I probably would’ve been completely overwhelmed by the end if Stephen one of the teens from the church hadn’t come in to help. While we only have on register I was able to let him take care of the people paying with a credit card, which allowed me to process the customers much quicker.

#412: Thank you Lord that Stephen came in to help with the bookstore today. It made my job so much easier, and helped the customers so much!

Day 324: Jimmy Wong

If my church had a mascot his name would probably be Jimmy Wong. Everyone knows Jimmy, and Jimmy knows everyone, he always greets you with a smile on his face, and has something nice to say to you. He serves the church as a greeter, so he’s right out front every Sunday and you can’t miss him. He even knows my dad who only visits occasionally! For the past year or so Jimmy has been battling cancer, but you would never guess it to look at him. He’s just as energetic as ever, and I don’t think he’s missed very many Sunday mornings since his diagnosis.

That’s the post I would’ve written if I were to write a post (like I’d thought about) about Jimmy before today. I’m sad to say Jimmy went home to be with the Lord this morning. I don’t think my church will ever be the same without Jimmy’s smiling face. He’s been such a wonderful example to all of us, not just in his battle with cancer, but in life and our Christian walk. I know we’ll all miss him, but his suffering is over, and he’s enjoying the Lord right now.

Day 324: Thank you Lord for Jimmy Wong and the light and example he’s been in my church. May we never forget his example, and try to follow it in our interactions with each other.

Day 117: Opportunities to Serve

Tonight I had the opportunity to serve the youth of my church and their parents at their annual Semi-Formal Banquet, and tomorrow I will be serving in the church bookstore. I used to think I hated serving, and maybe when I was younger I did, but recently I’ve realized I really enjoy serving the body of Christ. I don’t go out and volunteer for every event where they need people to serve, but if something comes up that I’m interested in and I have time I will.

I find serving the people of God very rewarding, and I enjoy being able to bless people by serving them. People are always telling me “Thank you for serving” and I have a good time. I try to remember that I am following Christ’s example who did not come to be served but to serve, who also said if you want to be the greatest you must be the servant of all.

Day 117: Thank you Lord for the opportunities I have to serve your people and be a blessing to them.

Day 69: Youth Advance Work Crew

(Still getting caught up from the weekend) I attended Youth Advance, my church’s annual youth conference, as part of the Work Crew who work in the kitchen serving breakfast, lunch and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast on Sunday. We work hard, hardly get any sleep, (I think I got about 10 hours total the entire weekend) and have a great time doing it! People are really appreciative of the work we do, and are constantly telling you “Thank you for serving.”

I work in the dinning hall serving the tables, family style. The trays are heavy, and cleaning up the tables can be gross at times, but we always have a great crew, and we get the tables set, served, and cleared quickly and efficiently. CJ heads up this part of the crew, and she does a great job keeping us on track, and talking with the camp staff so we know what to do.

We wouldn’t have anything to serve without the cooks. They get up really early to make the food, dish it up and give it to us to take out. I don’t think we thank them enough for what they do each year, and no one really gets to see what they do until afterwards.

The third part of the crew are the dishwashers, who make sure we have the dishes so we can serve the food. This year on Sunday morning, the dishwashing machine broke and they had to wash all the dishes by hand! They stayed working on it until they ran out of hot water, when I’m sure they would’ve liked to have been done long before! Roe heads up this part of the crew, as well as the entire Work Crew, and always does an amazing job! I seriously don’t know what we would do without her!

Day 69: Thank you Lord for the Youth Advance Work Crew and all the hard work they put in over the weekend, so the attendees can enjoy their weekend, and giving us an opportunity to participate in the weekend and have a great time doing it!
